(Port Bruce, ON) – The U.S. Coast Guard assisted the Elgin OPP with the rescue of kayakers just south of Port Bruce, Lake Erie last evening, June 23rd, 2020. Three youth, all 14 years old from the the Aylmer and Malahide Twp area, were out kayaking when they got into trouble after not being able to paddle back into shore in very rough and windy conditions last evening around 9:05 pm. Witnesses reported that they were being pushed away from shore out into open water. A witness (adult) from shore attempted to kayak out to the group and also got into trouble. Local boaters were able to get to two of the kayakers and pluck them from the water while the two others remained in the water. The Canadian Joint Rescue Coordination Centre – Kingston was able to have a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Helicopter dispatched and arrived on scene around 10:10 pm. The USCG helicopter deployed a rescue swimmer who remained with the two parties that were still in the water. All parties were safely rescued at approximately 10:20 pm. One youth was treated for mild hypothermia by EMS. Malahide Fire Services were also on scene and assisted in the rescue. All parties were wearing life jackets which was a key component in their survival.
