At approximately 11:00 a.m. today, Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a five-vehicle collision in the eastbound lane of Highway 401 between Iona Road and Union Road in Southwold Township, Ontario.
Five vehicles in total were involved: two tractor-trailers, one five-tonne commercial truck and two passenger vehicles.
At the time of the collision, all vehicles were traveling eastbound and were merging into one lane due to construction ahead.
Southwold Fire Department, along with St. Thomas Elgin Paramedics, and Air Orange ambulance attended the scene. One person was transported by land ambulance and another by air to hospital with serious injuries.
The two people transported to hospital are now listed in stable condition. One person in a passenger vehicle has died as a result of the collision.
The eastbound lanes are shut down to allow the OPP’s Technical Collision Investigators to further the investigation.
The motoring public can expect a prolonged closure leading into the evening hours. All eastbound traffic will be directed off at Iona Road. The OPP are urging motorist to follow the Emergency Detour Route (EDR) signs to get back to the Highway 401 eastbound lanes.
