Fail to Stop

The Elgin County OPP were on patrol in the area of Port Burwell, Ontario around 12:00 a.m. on May 5, 2020.

They observed a grey pickup truck being driven in a reckless manner and initiated a traffic stop on Lakeshore Line near McCord Street. The truck failed to stop for police, police did not engage the truck in a pursuit.

Police later located the vehicle abandoned on Lakeshore Line at Clarke Road after striking a hydro pole.

The OPP’s Canine Unit and Emergency Response Team (ERT) members were called to the scene in order to find the occupants.

Police located five people ranging from ages 16 years to 20 years.

At this point in the investigation a 16-year-old St. Thomas, Ontario youth stands charged with:

  • Stunt driving
  • Careless driving
  • Fail to remain
  • Drive motor vehicle with no licence
  • Flight from peace officer

The youth was later released to their parent and will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice St. Thomas at a later date.
