GIRLS’  RUGBY NEW AT EESS

(Information from coach-teacher Christine Lyon) – “I decided to start the girls rugby club because I have a passion for the sport. I used to play when I lived in Hong Kong years ago. It calls for girls of all shapes and sizes. There is a niche for everyone in this sport. We will play at the club level this year with a view to perhaps fielding a team in the future.

This is the first girls’ rugby club at EESS.  I decided not to have try outs as no one knew anything about the game. I told the girls that anyone who turned out to practice would get a shot at playing. We now have 25 dedicated girls. The game is no different to the boys game. However, on Friday there were no conversions after tries were scored, and my girls were not lifting in the line-outs.

On Friday night they played their very first game against Woodstock (who are a league team). The result was a draw, with both teams scoring a try (ours was scored by Tess Ward). The second game was against London Laurier. Laurier won with two tries and a score of 10 -0 .

We have two more games lined up so far. We will playing Huron Park in Woodstock on  May 14. They will then come to EESS at 4PM on May 30th. I have a co-coach Sarah Hoyer and two player coaches; Jeremy Wiebe who is playing  for the boys team this season and Cole Armstrong who played for the boys last season.”

COLD DAMAGES FRUIT TREES

(Information from Dick Saarloos of BerryHill Farms north of Aylmer) – “The tree buds are damaged by the freezing temperatures – a degree can make a big difference with the fruit buds.  It was just too cold last week and the fruit trees were at a stage where they could not handle those low temperatures. (-5 on Saturday night).  There was not much we could do – we think there is considerable damage. We did manage to save most of the strawberries though by irrigating most of the night. We still hope to have a light crop, we’ll see.”

Dick Saarloos spent several nights irrigating his berry crop in order to protect the plants from the freezing cold last week. (Contributed) (CLICK)
