ONE YEAR AGO THIS WEEK:
“P.V. GOLF IS 50 YEARS OLD”
(Fifty years ago this week Pleasant Valley Golf Course,Aylmer, opened.) In 1959 Mr. O.A. Hepburn sold his 167 acre farm on the present site to a group of three investors – Dr Bill Cresswell of Aylmer, Jack Broughton of London, and Jack Rice of Aylmer. The trio found they soon needed more financial help and so the Pleasant Valley Syndicate was formed and included the following Aylmerites: Dr Barney Clarke, Dr John D. Colquhoun, Harry Gunstone, Arthur Hueston, J. Kiriakopolous, Dr Don Robinson, Frank Truman, and George VanPatter. This group later expanded to include 40-50 investors. The course took a year to get ready (actually the Belmont Golf Course was starting at same time.) Dave Ferguson of Aylmer was a landscaper at Imperial Tobacco and originally came to Canada from Scotland to work as a golf course designer so he was given the task of setting up Pleasant Valley. Dr. Cresswell said they tried to keep the natural layout of the farm – they didn’t use a bulldozer a lot – in the preparation. There were no permanent bridges in the original course – the two had to be taken out in the fall – to get across Catfish Creek. They also used the original farmhouse and barn for clubhouse and equipment purposes for many years. In April, 1961, they opened.
