AYLMER GIRL WORLD KARATE CHAMP
-
(Kristen McCord, 21, of Aylmer, recently competed in four events in November, in Spain, at the World Karate and Kickboxing Championships winning two gold medals and two silvers. She provided the following information;)
1. Background?.- “I attended EESS ; I attended Fanshawe College graduating with a Diploma in Developmental Services. I am currently working for Community Living Elgin as a Developmental Services Worker. My parents are Tammy and Dennis McCord of Port Burwell. I just moved to Aylmer.
2. Martial Arts Achievements? I began training in Martial Arts with Martial Arts Canada when I was just 6 years old. I mpw am a Nidan (2nd Degree Black Belt). I first started because I thought it would be a fun extracurricular activity! I have been running my own classes in past years previously at Port Burwell and most recently in Fairground at the Houghton Public School. Some of my achievements with Martial Arts Canada include: Bushido Heart of a Warrior Award (Martial Arts Canada’s most prestigious award), Adult Competitor of the Year, 1st Place Overall in Advanced Sparring, etc.; In 2009 I was the 2nd Place NBL World Champion Women’s Continuous Sparring and 2nd Place SKIL (Sport Karate International) World Champion Women’s Point Sparring; In 2011 in WKC World Karate and Kickboxing Awards I was 1st Place Ontario Provincial Champion Women’s Point Sparring and 2nd place Canadian National Champion Women’s Point Sparring etc.
3. Weekly Routine? – “When possible I normally train in St. Thomas with Sensei MaryLynn Maerten Okkerse of Martial Arts Canada on Monday evenings and I also train privately for Kata with multi world title champion Andrew Cabilan from Hamilton. I also pick up extra training when I can on Thursday nights in Tillsonburg.
4.Competitions? I attempt a smaller tournament once a month or so with my students, as it builds character and a great competitive spirit. I have competed in several different Karate Circuits all over Canada and the USA, travelling to Erie, Pittsburgh, Georgia, Ottawa, etc. To make team Canada, I needed to qualify at the Provincial level Once placing at the Provincial level, I travelled to Ottawa in May in hopes of placing in the top 4 to earn a position on TEAM CANADA. In Ottawa I placed 2nd place overall in Women’s lightweight Point Fighting, 3rd overall in Traditional Kata, and 3rd overall in Team Kata. I was so happy to make Team Canada for all 3 events!!
5. Results In Spain? Gold Medal World Champion in Women’s Point Fighting, Gold Medal World Champion in Women’s Continuous Fighting, Silver Medalist in Traditional Kata, and Silver Medalist in Team Kata.
6. What’s next? I am currently opening up a new Karate Class location in Port Stanley at the Public School beginning January 12, 2012 and looking forward to developing new martial artists young and old With the announcement of the WKC World Championships being hosted here in Canada (Montreal) for 2012, I am already stepping up my training and planning to be a part of Team Canada again.”
