CHRISTMAS 50 YEARS AGO – 1961
“SUNDAY MOVIES VOTE IN AYLMER”
-
Fifty years ago, in December 1961, Aylmerites had to squeeze in going to the polls before heading to the stores. The owners of the Strand Theatre, at the corner of Sydenham and John, had asked Council to hold a plebiscite on holding movies on Sundays, declaring they may have to close if they couldn’t use that option to increase attendance. Council, despite objections from the Aylmer Ministerial Association, decided to hold the vote, with the question – Are you in favour of moving pictures after 1:30 pm on Sundays? Aylmerites supported the motion by a narrow 331-298 margin. And in January, Sunday movies began in Aylmer for the first time – with three showtimes, at 2, 7 and 9 pm!

Donations are welcome – phone 773-3921- and proceeds will go to Faith Mission which sends clothes overseas to needy families.
