EAST ELGIN SNOW ALERT

 

(From Environment Canada, For East Elgin, 4:30 am) – “Snow has begun over Southern Ontario and will taper off from west to east today. Snowfall totals will average about 10 cm with higher amounts to the northeast of the Great Lakes. Untreated roads are expected to be slippery during the morning commute.”

 

 

SPITS SNAP LOSING SKID

 

AYLMER – The Aylmer Spitfires lost four of five contests over the holidays in Provincial Junior C hockey action. They were defeated 6-3 by North Middlesex, 9-3 by Pt. Stanley, 5-3 by last place Lucan and 5-2 by Thamesford (in a game marred by nine misconducts) before sidelining Mt. Brydges 5-2 here Saturday. Goalscorers were: James Collins with a pair and singles by Tyler Hinde, Sebastian Nogueira and Dustin Dunlop vs Mt. Brydges; Curtis Hardwick and Ryan Vandenbroek vs Thamesford; Brayden Smith with two and Ryan VanRoestel with a single vs Lucan; VanRoestel, Dawson Winchester and Matt Bond vs Pt. Stanley and Dallas Loiselle with a pair and Connor Richer with a single vs North Middlesex.  The Spits now have a record of nine wins and twenty losses – good for eighth place in the nine team league. Next games are Wednesday hosting Lambeth and Saturday hosting Thamesford.

FIRE DESTROYS AYLMER RESIDENCE

 

(Information from Sam Taylor of Aylmer Fire Services) – A fire on New Year’s Day destroyed a home on Oak Street near the corner of Elm St. in Aylmer. Both Aylmer and Malahide Fire Services personnel responded to the call around 4 pm. It was believed to have been caused by an electrical space heater in the garage. Firemen were on the scene until 10 pm. No dollar loss was reported at this time.

OBITUARIES:

 

BILL KAVANAGH WAS FORMER POLICE CHIEF

-Kavanagh, William Michael passed away Saturday in his 82nd year. Survivors: wife Ruth-Anne (Horton) Kavanagh; three children including Steve Kavanagh(Linda) of Aylmer etc.. Predeceased by his wife Frances Rose(Kearney) Kavanagh(1999). He was born in Montreal and had a 40 year career in policing, including Chief of Police in Aylmer in 1979. In 1987, he became Deputy-Chief in St.Thomas. He was a past president of the Aylmer Shrine Club and was Aylmer citizen of the year in 2009. Visitation at the HA Kebbel Funeral Home on Monday 7-9 and Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s United Church on Wednesday at 11 am.

 

-Jansen, Albert Peter of Aylmer passed away Thursday in his 82nd year. Survivors: wife Rita (VanRoessel) Jansen, two children including Ed (Johnna) of Aylmer etc.. He was born in The Netherlands. The funeral was held at the HA Kebbel Funeral Home this morning.

 

-Stevens, Lillian Olive of Belmont passed away Thursday in her 93rd year. Survivors: husband Richard Stevens; two children including Bud(Shirley) of Belmont etc.. The funeral service was held today at the HA Kebbel Funeral Home.

 

 

MALE INJURES 3 OFFICERS IN AYLMER

 

AYLMER – (From Elgin OPP) – On Thursday around 8:30 pm members of the Norfolk/Haldimand County Community Street Crime Unit were in Aylmer and stopped a wanted male in a business parking lot at the north end of town. The male fled on foot and then brandished an edge weapon at police. In the course of the arrest the male injured three officers with the weapon. Officers were treated at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital and were later released with minor injuries. Aylmer Police officers attended the scene and assisted in the arrest. A 33 year old Norfolk County man was charged with Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, Assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, Failing to comply with a probation order and Failing to comply with a recognizance. Added Adam Crewdson of the Elgin OPP: “A Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) was used in the course of the arrest. However, arrests or CEW deployments aren’t always simple. The incident concluded with officers being hurt and in the end the male was in custody and no civilians were injured.”
