SAVING LOCAL SCHOOLS: NOT ALL AGREE

The recent proposal by the TVDSB to close four area schools and build a new elementary school in Belmont has left mixed emotions in the area. The schools affected are Springfield, New Sarum, Westminster Central and South Dorchester. Springfield Public School supporters last month formed a parents’ group to try to keep their school open. New Sarum Public School supporters have expressed a similar concern. Said School Council Co-Chair Kristy Thorogood: “We do not want the proposal to go through with the idea of New Sarum closing. We love our school and our community/family. We will be right alongside Springfield in the fight to keep our school open.” Meanwhile, groups representing the other two schools are favouring a new building. Sarah Fletcher, Chair of the Westminster School Parent Council and Chair of the Belmont School Alliance committee said: “There is not a Save South Dorchester group nor a Save Westminster Central group. WCPS and SDPS have formed a Belmont School Alliance. Collectively we support the TVDSB proposal to close our schools and build a new school for our children in Belmont.”
