“ELGIN FEEDS PET SHOW”

(AYLMER) – (Information provided by Teresa Pressey of Elgin Feeds) The Pet Show was held at the Optimist Park in Aylmer again this year.  The rain held off just long enough this year for us to finish the show.  We had approx. 60 people and 30 dogs in attendance, 1 cat and 1 guinea pig.  Our events included Pet who looks most like his owner, Pet the Judges would most like to take home, Potato sack race, Musical Sit, Smallest and biggest dog, and more.  My kids and nieces were the judges.  We had a fundraiser BBQ for Helping Paws Rescue.  All Breed Canine Rescue had a booth as well as Shurgain, and Raw For Pets.  Elgin Feeds Ltd. sponsored the event.  Without the support of Wilf Saarloos at Elgin Feeds this event wouldn’t be possible. We had lots of support from everyone involved.  For the third year in a row Nicole DeJong donated her birthday money to Helping Paws Rescue.  She asks that her friends and family donate money to the rescue instead of bringing gifts.Helping Paws Rescue was able to raise almost $500 to help with vet costs for our rescue dogs.

” ‘EAST ELGIN GRAD NURSES’ DISBAND”

(AYLMER) – (Information provided by Dale Murray of ‘East Elgin Graduate Nurses’)  “One of the main reasons why the group existed was to provide a source of professional development networking for the nurses who worked or lived in the east.  Today there are many alternative sources of educational resources and networking opportunities available to nurses such as the internet, workplace sponsored inservices and professional associations.  Also the needs of the group members have changed over the years as the group has aged and attendance at meetings has dropped significantly over the last couple of years.
-
The group has made significant contributions to the citizens of the east.  They initiated Meals on Wheels which has been taken over now by VON and have been strong advocates for healthcare resources in the east. When the group has met we have provided a vast array of speakers from a variety of health disiplines that have enabled us to stay on top of the many resources that are available to consumers living in the east.  This in turn has helped us get the information to those who needed the services.  New doctors coming to town, changes in blood services, health promotion activities from the health unit,  advances in medicine, service organizations, charitable organizations and changes in the way health care is being delivered are just a few of the topics that invited speakers have shared with us at our quarterly meetings for over 50 years.
-
In 2008 the group put together a book of memories called “East Elgin Graduate Nurses, Our Stories, Celebrating 50 Years”.  In it are listed the founding members:  Barbara Smith, Maudie Reynolds, Ann Axelson, Lois McConnell, Pauline Roberts, Kathleen McLay, Helene Robinson, Florence Parker, Jean Cresswell, Florence Marchant, Mary Sheppard, Anne McArthur, Gladys Partlow, L. Mae Priddle, Olive Williamson, Audrey Glover, Patricia Timms, Ann Maloney, Blair Barons, Doris Strieb and Dorothy Warden.  The stories provide a glimpse of the lives and culture of nurses and nursing in our community over the past 50 years.  It has been my privilege to be a part of this group and it is with sadness that I see it coming to an end at this time.”

“LOCAL CROP UPDATE

(Info from Mark Wales, Malahide farmer and OFA V-P) “Heat and moisture overall have been good and most crops continue to be a week or more ahead. But Sprouting is becoming a problem in wheat. Heat stress is causing some quality problems in cucumbers. Weed growth has been tremendous and therefore lots of extra hoeing weeding cultivating and spraying. Drowning of spots in some fields as well is becoming apparent. Also some wind damage in some fields. Hopefully we can get an expanded period of sunshine to dry things out.”
