COPENHAGEN – Witnesses report that the vehicle and the body of the 57 year old male were recovered from Lake Erie around suppertime Saturday.

(FRIDAY – From Elgin OPP) – Around 4:30 pm an OPP cruiser on Springfield Road, on the lookout for a suspicious vehicle, observed the vehicle with a 57 year old male driving and while turning to conduct a traffic stop, noted something thrown from the vehicle.  The officer stopped to retrieve the package. Then, while patrolling the last known route of the suspect vehicle, the officer was contacted by a civilian and advised that the vehicle had driven over a cliff at the end of Springfield Road ending up in Lake Erie.  Members of the OPP located the fully submerged vehicle in the lake. The OPP has notified the province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) which is now in charge of the investigation.

(From the office of Brent Smith, Malahide Fire Chief) – “Our firefighters were on scene from approximately 4 pm to 9 pm on Friday and most of the day on Saturday. They were providing high angle rope rescue and water rescue services. They were able to go over the bank to the water’s edge and into the water to locate the car on Friday evening. On Saturday they assisted with removing the vehicle from the water and then recovered the body of the victim from the vehicle and brought him up the cliff. The cliff was 111 feet high and the car was 86 meters from shore. All of their efforts were a true test of the training of Malahide’s volunteer Firefighters. They did a job well done in very difficult circumstances.”
