” HEALTH UNIT WILL ENFORCE CIGARILLO CHANGES! “

(ELGIN) – On July 1st Ontario announced a ban on the sale of flavoured, individual Cigarillos. The province said tobacco manufacturers had been targetting young smokers (under 19s were allowed to purchase them) with this product – 21 flavours, colourful packaging, selling individually for $1. Cigarillos can still be sold but must be unflavoured and in packs of 20.  Gemma Urbani, Health Promoter, Elgin StThomas Health Unit, said local health officials welcomed the change and said they would be enforcing the ban locally.

“APPLES AND ORANGES………:”

“We could use more ads. If we could get more, we would like to drop the price from $30 to $25 monthly. Compare to a newspaper ad – you pay $35 for a small display ad, also at the side, and people probably see it just once. Here they see it EVERYDAY -for a month- and we average 500 hits daily. Hey, how do you like them apples! Contact us.”

“SOLAR PRICING DOESN’T AFFECT SILVERCREEK”

(AYLMER) – (There has been strong reaction from rural Ontario solar project owners  after the province announced recently a price decrease for solar energy hydro sales. This information is from Dave Moerman, owner of Silver Creek Solar Farm, south of Aylmer) “The recent possible price decrease affects MicroFIT ground mounted solar projects only (less than 10kw). This does not affect our project which has applied to the FIT program which is 10kw and greater.”

(AYLMER) An Aylmer woman driving her vehicle east on Talbot in front of The Mennonite Furniture last week suddenly had her brakes and power steering seize up and she mounted the south curb and hit a tree on the sidewalk before stopping. No charges were laid. No damages occurred – except the tree  could not be saved!

“AYLMER  ELECTIONS LETTERS:”

1. A READER WRITES: - “please… we need more candidates to be elected as councillers, make a change, if you want to complain on how things are done…..well step up. I’ve been asked, sorry , I live in Malahide, and things are good here.” (Kevin Morrell)

2. A READER WRITES: – “I would like to remind everyone that when you cast your vote you are expecting the person you voted for to represent the Town and its citizens to the best of their knowledge. If they voted in favour or against paving the parking lot we need to accept that and leave it alone and move on. This is democracy working so don’t go back behind the scene and try to undermine the councillors who voted for it as they are doing what we asked of them when we voted them in. I will vote for the person who i think can make up their mind what is best for the Town of Aylmer and its citizens. We do not need public forums for every issue, thats why we elect our mayors and councillors.” (Bob Nesbitt)

“MALAHIDE BUDGET APPROVED”

(MALAHIDE) – (Malahide Council approved their 2010 Budget Thursday. Treasurer Susan Wilson provided this information):

“An average single family home with a 2010 assessment of $182,500.00 will see a total 2010 tax increase of $129.06 or a 4.82% increase.  This total increase of $129.06 is due to four separate factors: * As the result of reassessment  there will be a $22.58 increase, * As a result of a tax levy increase by the County of Elgin, there will be a $36.81 increase, * As a result of a tax levy increase by the Township of Malahide there will be a $69.66 increase, * There was no change in the School Board taxation. Since there was a reassessment for the 2010 Taxation Year, not all properties will be impacted in the same manner.  The average Seasonal Recreational Dwelling will see an increase of 10.67% or $173.55, while average Farmland will see an increase of 1.61% or $19.55.”
