“KINSMEN: ‘FIREWORKS CAN’T GO BACK TO STEEN’ “

(AYLMER) – (Last week’s SURVEY indicated 72% wanted the Canada Day Fireworks back at Steen. The Kinsmen Club had this response:)
“We can’t set off any shells even close to the size currently being used  at the Complex over at Steen. The Superior Propane place is too close! The display would have too many height restrictions. I wonder did people notice that is was a much better display because of that this year? Also there are a lot of other community events that day that could not be held at Steen Park. Your readers also need to know (and others in the community) that we didn’t collect enough money.  We were about $2,000.00 short!!!  In the future we might have to scale the show back if people don’t start giving. The general public needs to realize how much it means if they donate…..lots just walk in and give nothing! The Kinsmen don’t have access to funds from fundraisers like they used to.” (Dick Campbell, Kinsmen Fireworks)

“AYLMER ELECTION:”

A READER WRITES:

“After having read Mr. Vandermeersch’s comments on Mr. Couckyut’s opening election statement, I have to really wonder who was having a “rant”? Why is Mr. Vandermeersch always so combative – to display the ruse that he’s a tough politician, looking after the interests of the tax-payers of Aylmer? Voting to take $200,000 of tax-payers money to make a parking lot instead of a green space is financial responsibility? Forget about the environment! I hope that he remembers that he is an elected official, and that the voters have a good memory – they deserve to have their interests heard, and not by someone whose tone boarders on that of a bully….A more open and collaborative form of government where the public could voice their opinion is needed. I personally think that some of our elected officials are afraid of this concept – remember the open house for the report on bandshell park? Don’t forget the backtracking and “forceful” statements that have been expressed recently regarding the renaming of the bandshell and the donation. The real reason that they are afraid is that they would be forced to listen to the opinions of all the voters and have to govern in a democratic manner – isn’t that what it’s all about?” (Dave Dykeman)

  1. Bob Nesbitt says:

I would like to remind everyone that when you cast your vote you are expecting the person you voted for to represent the Town and it’s citizens to the best of their knowledge. If they voted in favour or against paving the parking lot we need to accept that and leave it alone and move on. This is democracy working so don’t go back behind the scene and try to undermine the councillors who voted for it as they are doing what we asked of them when we voted them in. I will vote for the person who i think can make up their mind what is best for the Town of Aylmer and it’s citizens. We do not need public forums for every issues, thats why we elect our mayors an councillors.
