SPRINGFIELD NATIVE IN ALBERTA PLAY
(Contributed) – “Rosebud School of the Arts, in Rosebud Alberta, will feature student Amy Burks, a native of Springfield, as Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible, running April 13-28, at the Rosebud Studio Stage. Amy is in the third year of the Mentorship Programme at RSA.
(Amy provided this background) – “I grew up in Lyons on the family farm. I attended EESS. I always enjoyed being a part of church and school productions. I was truly taken by acting when I decided on a whim to try out for the school play MacBeth. I knew from there on in it was something I was made for. I received a large portion of my theatre experience from East Elgin. I participated in the productions: MacBeth (Witch), Seussical the Musical (Cindy Lou Who) and Wizard of Oz (Dorothy). I was able to be a part of Wizard of Oz again when I was a ‘child wrangler’ for the Grand Theatre in London. I went on to study for two years in London, England at a institution called East 15 Acting School, where I graduated with a FDA in Community Theatre.
I’m currently following the theatre trail in my third year at Rosebud School of the Arts, (Rosebud,AB). I’ve had the privilege to be a part of some great productions, my latest being more musical, the opening act for the Good Lovelies in Rosebud. Upcoming shows are The Crucible opening April 13, where I play Elizabeth Proctor and Anne of Green Gables in May, where I will play Mrs. Blewett and Lucilla. Upon graduating next year I will have the joy of joining the ranks of countless young actors at many an audition! I am extremely excited to be where I am and to be able to follow a career I love. ”

A READER WRITES:
“We recently moved out of the area and often check your website for local news in the area. Imagine my disgust that there is a poll regarding the tragic kidnapping, rape, torture and murder of Tori Stafford disguised as a scare tactic for the community. There is NO lesson in Tori’s rape and murder. NONE! It was a tragic, senseless, crime. By suggesting that all children should be picked up after school is also implying that Tori’s family is responsible for her death. By suggesting that no one talk to strangers is suggesting that strangers will hurt you. Society should recognize problem youth earlier? What about making those problem youth accountable for their actions? How about tackling drugs and proverty as we all know it’s a cycle that will be repeated with the next generation. The issue isn’t about recognizing problem youth – ask anyone in a small town, we all KNOW who the trouble kids are and whose parents have no idea where their child is and nor do they care. How about tackling learning issues in school at a younger age in order to keep youth from lashing out at the frustration of not being able to learn so easily like we expect them too? Video surveillance?.Surveillance costs money, it arguably cuts into our privacy rights. I sincerely hope you remove the thoughtless poll from your website immediately There is a lot you can educate your readers on instead of posting a poll that so inflames the public by implying misconceptions about crime.”
Sincerely – Sabrina Scrimegour, Lucan

EFFECT OF EARLY SPRING ON APPLES ETC.
(Information from Dick Saarloos of BerryHill Farms, Aylmer) – “There is no frost in the ground, there is no ice on the lake, so my prediction is we are going to have an early spring. However next week we are supposed to have freezing temperatures at night so that will tighten up the buds and slow things down a bit. I’m going to put my first scab control spray on tomorrow and that is about 3 weeks earlier than I have ever done before. I have taken the straw off the berries as well and I usually don’t do that until the second week of April. This trend is not only happening here but throughout most of North America; Europe however is having our winter and our normal spring.”

“IMPAIRED DRIVER, FATALITIES”
SPRINGFIELD – (FROM ELGIN OPP) – Elgin OPP have charged a 30-year-old Springfield man with two counts of Impaired Driving Causing Death following Saturday’s accident east of Springfield. The collision occurred on Pressey line just west of Carter Rd. in Malahide.
Police have identified the two deceased as Jayson IRWIN, age 30, of Aylmer, and Lori WOOLEY age 46 also of Aylmer. They died at the scene. The investigation revealed that the driver of a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck was travelling eastbound on Pressey Line when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a bridge abutment on the south side and apparently then skidded sideways before coming to rest down the road. UPDATE: NEW SCHEDULE AT MCGREGOR
(This year McGregor Public School has introduced a new ‘balanced day’ schedule. Principal Richard Auckland reports on how it’s working) - “The balanced day has been something that has been used by many TVDSB schools. McGregor is the first school in East Elgin to implement it. It has been a successful implementation. Any feedback received has been positive from students, parents, the staff and the community. The day goes by quickly and students have longer blocks of learning time. The blocks of learning time enable focused instruction and learning time for our students. Students eat twice in the day at 10:40 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. Students seem to be eating better also as a result of our snack program which was implemented this year which focuses on providing fresh fruits and vegetables for each of our students. Feedback was requested at our school council meetings and through our newsletter and any comments received were in support of continuing the schedule for 2012-2013.”

Karen is the daughter/step-daughter of Ruth and Jeff Haldenby of Aylmer. She says Emerson visits Aylmer at least once a week.) - “I took the video Monday, March 14th just before lunch. I had been sick for about a week before I took the video, and Emerson (the baby) would occasionally get really scared when I blew my nose. That morning was the first time he would laugh afterwards, so I got out the video camera and started recording. I uploaded the video to YouTube because I really wanted my husband to see it. The video started getting a lot of views the first day, and within 24 hours, Ryan Seacrest posted a link to the video on his webpage! We can’t believe all the attention it’s getting. NO MPP WEBSITE YET
New Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Jeff Yurek sent out a newsletter last week in which his website was noted. However, it was not functional just yet (and still not today at noon). Said Wlliam Ross on Thursday: = “I’m Jeff Yurek’s Legislative Assistant and yes we will have a website. It was scheduled to be up prior to the release of the newsletter but due to a couple of hiccups, the launch date got delayed. I have been assured it will be up sometime this afternoon (Thurs.)”
