WAGLER BOOK ON AYLMER AMISH

(Ira Wagler, 50,  of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania,  left the Aylmer Amish at age 17 in the late 1970s.  He has a blog, he works for a building company and next week he has a book coming out through Tyndale Publishers – “Growing Up Amish”. He provided some insight for TANews.)

1.  Some examples of relatives still in Aylmer/ Last time you were here?
- 

“Everyone with the surname Wagler or Stoll, among a few others, is related to me. From first cousin to whatever distance. I was last in Aylmer for one day in early February, 2009, for my uncle Abner Wagler’s funeral. ”
- 

2. -Why did you leave at age 17?
- 

“Guess you have to read the book. A combination of a lot of factors. Restlessness, discontent, chafing at the rigid Amish rules and structure. And the youthful yearning for adventure, I suppose. ”
-

3. Any contact with the Aylmer community now? 

-
“Very little, except for my older sister  who lives there, surrounded by her family.”
-

4. Why write the book?

-

“Short answer: Because I write. I would have written everything in that book, sooner or later, and posted it on my blog at www.irawagler.com anyway. But the stars seemed to align, as far as timing. And so it all came down as it did. I’m still in a half-stunned, grateful awe that a respected international publisher like Tyndale picked it up. It’s always been my lifelong dream, to write a book.”

5. What immediate family contacts have you kept?
-

“I have ten siblings, five brothers and five sisters. I am not estranged from any, thankfully. We are all glad to see each other when we get together. I can’t be grateful and thankful enough for that.”
-

6. Do you think many have left Aylmer?
-

“When I lived there in my childhood, back in the late 60s, early 70s, there was only one district. Aylmer has grown some since, and they now have two districts, maybe three. People come and people go. That happens a lot in smaller communities like Aylmer, and doesn’t particularly reflect badly on the area.”

DAVENPORT GRAD ISSUE UPDATE:

AYLMER – Today is the Davenport School Grade 8 graduation. Tonight is the parent-organized Grade 8 graduation dance at the Knights of Columbus hall. But Arden McAnulty’will not be at either - instead her parents Martin and Carie McAnulty of Aylmer  are hosting a party for her at the EEC Complex. The McAnultys,  whose daughter was denied participation in the Grade 8 graduation events, said last night they had been working all year on her involvement . They said  they were even assured by the TVDSB Director that she could graduate but that depended on the Principal’s consent. She had attended Davenport a Gr. 5-8 school for 3 years until going to a special needs school last year. The Parents group organizing the dance tonight did not respond yet to our request for a comment.

Edna Agnes Carrothers, London and formerly of Aylmer in her 88th year, on June 26. Survivors include: husband  Blake Carrothers and sister in-law to Graydon Carrothers and wife Gladys, Aylmer etc. Edna worked at  the Ministry of Natural Resources for 25 years. Friends may call at the H. A. Kebbel Funeral Home, Aylmer on Tuesday 7-8 p.m. where the funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at 11:00 am. Cremation will follow.

(From Kevin Verbruggen) – “We have had a busy season with all the weather and stuff.  The Aylmer Rampage Men’s Soccer team is having a wonderful season so far.  We are currently second in the standings in the South –Western Ontario Soccer League (SWOSL).  We have a  record of 6 -1-1.  Our only loss coming from the first place team in the league.  They are the defending two time league champs.  We face them tonight at Steen park in Aylmer at 7 and hope to hand them their first loss of the season.  We have played in Aylmer now for three season. ”

NO SIGN, NO TICKET…YET?

The west municipal parking lot, by the Bandshell, has no sign yet, similar to the east lot,indicating parking time restrictions. (kb) (click).

AYLMER – About 30 vehicles were issued $10 parking tickets for parking too long in the west municipal parking lot last Thursday. However there is no time limit sign at the lot similar to one that is posted in the main east lot. And the offenders said no tickets had been issued previously in the nine months since it was redone – and no warning was given. Police Chief Andre Reymer said: “The parking lot is bylawed and has been so for decades. Signage is everywhere else on the street and other lots. Additional signs will be posted but the law still applies. Not getting a ticket before doesn’t grant any rights.”  Said Dan Dale , Aylmer’s Director of Municipal Services,  who did tell one offender yesterday her ticket would not be processed:  “ The Town will review tickets with the individuals at their request. Also the Director of Operations is making arrangements to have new 2 hr. parking signs installed. “

AYLMER – The Free Press  has a report today about an Aylmer girl who is being denied participation in a Grade 8 Davenport graduation dance  because she spent her Grade 8 year, despite attending Davenport up until then,  at a private school for learning disabilities. The dance, to be held at the K of C hall, is actually run by the parents of the graduates  – who feel  they can’t make exceptions. It is not a school-sanctioned event.

HARLEY HOTCHKISS DIES

-

-(Some information from CTV site) – Harley Hotchkiss, former Calgary Flames part owner has died at the age of 83. Hotchkiss was battling prostate cancer and died on Wednesday, the team said on their website. He was part of the group that bought the Atlanta Flames and moved them to Calgary in 1980. He was born in the Straffordville area and attended high school in Tillsonburg. His son John owns Riverbend Farms Nursery at Mt. Salem. Hotchkiss, who served as chairman of the NHL’s board of governors from 1995 to 2007, sold his minority stake in the Flames this season.He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006. He worked as a geologist, manager, and president for several oil companies before going on to establish his own energy companies.

OBITUARIES:

-BEVERIDGE, Janice - formerly of Aylmer, passed away on Monday, June 20th, 2011,  in her 83rd year.  Wife of the late Dr. George Beveridge. Janice was born in Comrie, Scotland. A public Memorial service to celebrate Janice’s life will be held at First United Church, St. George St., St. Thomas on Friday at 1:00 p.m. Cremation has taken place. No visitation prior to the service. Arrangements through Williams Funeral Home, St.Thomas.

A large crowd attended the official opening of the renovated Palmer Bandshell and Park last night. Mayor Jack Couckuyt, shown here dancing with Bandshell fundraiser Mary Jane Lampman, gave an address and performances by the Aylmer Community Band and Choir followed. MCS AUCTION SATURDAY

(Information from Abe Harms at MCS.) - ”Organized by Mennonite Community Services held at the fairgrounds in the curling club barn .  All donated items  are being auctioned off – both new and used.  Auctioneers donate their time and are from Jutzi Auctions .  About 16 food booths – everything from ethnic foods to hamburgers.          Breakfast starts at 7:00 and the sales starts at 9:00 .  Strawberry fest is on site going on at the same time. ”
