THEFT FROM MNR ON WEEKEND

-

(From Aylmer Police)  Sometime between the hours of 7am Sunday, May 8 and 7am Monday, May 9 the Middlesex Stewardship Council had a quantity of equipment stolen from the Ministry of Natural Resources property at 615 John St. North, Aylmer.  Missing equipment is: 1) a 2009 John Deere Gator XUV 850D with a custom mounted light on the roof and a custom metal screen mounted to the roll bar frame behind the seats, 2) a Wildfire Rancher Unit – Fire pump and tank, 3) a Tuffline 52” ATV Disk and 4) a 7’ x 18’ custom built tube frame flat-bed trailer from Canada Trailers.

Middlesex Stewardship Council is a community-based organization which focuses on habitat restoration, conservation and enhancement.  The Council works with landowners to implement tree planting and tallgrass prairie projects, and the creation of wetlands.  The projects are intended to provide education and engage the community to ensure the future of our natural resources.

This equipment is vital to projects being carried out by the Council.  The Gator is essential in all projects as a mode of transportation around project sites.  It is also used during prescribed burns to transport the fire pump and tank.  The ATV Disk is used to prepare sites for prescribed burning, and the trailer is used to transport the Gator and other equipment to and from project sites.  The Council has fundraised over the past three years to purchase this equipment in order to make it available at no cost to landowners completing habitat restoration projects.

The total loss is $26,000 that is uninsured. Anyone with any knowledge of this crime is asked to contact your local police or Crime Stoppers.

MALAHIDE/BAYHAM WASTE SURVEY:

-

(Press Release, Edited) – “The Township of Malahide, the Municipality of Bayham, and the Municipality of Central Elgin are jointly completing a Waste Recycling Strategy and Waste Management Plan (Plan). Currently, the municipalities primarily offer garbage and blue box collection and depot days for household hazardous wastes and large items. The current waste diversion rate is about 24%. The Province’s waste diversion goal is 60%.

The intent of this project is to review the current waste management systems and develop a Plan for the next 20 years. There are a number of questions that need to be addressed as a part of the Plan development.

1. What is an appropriate waste diversion rate target for the 3 municipalities?

2. Can the existing programs be enhanced or are completely new programs required?

3. What types of new programs could be added to the current waste management system that could reduce waste disposal and improve waste diversion; and

4. Should each municipality continue to operate its own garbage and recycling programs or is it worth working together to operate and manage one garbage and recycling program?

The survey is available at:  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WasteManagementSurvey . “As a goal we want to hear from at least 500 households. ” says Steering Committee Chair Dave Mennil

LOCAL NDP FRED SINCLAIR COMMENTS:

-

“I believe that Canadians were looking for change, tired of the same old political games – Harper and Iggy telling Canadians what they wanted.  As well Canadians saw that the NDP was really listening to their issues and concerns. Its  unfortunate that we are in a Conservative government. Now they will pass budgets that aren’t good for all Canadians just the elite. We do have a NDP opposition which in itself is historic.”

A.C.T. PLAY INFO. – ‘SELF HELP’

-

(Contributed – This play by Aylmer Community Theatre begins next Thursday – see yesterday’s report) – “Norm Foster’s comedy, “Self Help” combines recognizable characters with bizarre circumstances to fill your evening with laughs. Not so successful actors, Hal and Cindy Savage, (Ron Sawyer and Barbara Warnock), decide to leave the theatre and make their fortune in the self help circuit.  Seven years later their new maid, (Katherine Thompson), finds herself in the midst of some very confusing circumstances.  Put into the mix Detective Snow, (Mark Smith) and journalist Jeremy Cash, (Kyle Pickersgill) and the confusion becomes epic.  New to the ACT stage is Robyn Rundle-Drake as the Savages’ agent, Ruby Delvecchio.

This show is being directed by Harry Edison who has often appeared on stage but is working with stage manager Mary Morin for the first time back stage. Rehearsals for “Self Help” have had the cast and crew in stitches so the audience will surely enjoy this comedy, the final show of ACT’s 2010-2011 season. Tickets are available by calling (519) 773-3372.”

COMMENT BY CHP CARL HIEMSTRA:

-
“I was a liitle suprised at the CHPs election results because of the favourable coverage, kind comments recieved after all candidates meetings and the interest generated through our advertising. In our system of democracy, it is very hard to convince people to vote for a non traditional party. Especially with so many Canadians strategically voting, trying to avoid having a goverment they do not like. I am also convinced the Christian Heritage Party needs to, across this great country,  show voters there is another viable option in voting so we will get more national coverage. We as a party need to engage the voters who have given up on the voting process.”
