“CHRIST-’MUST’ LIST #3 -Cor. Cupboard Bills”

-

AYLMER -  Greg and Avril Currie and family began a fund in April 2009 to offset the operating expenses of the Corner Cupboard bank.  Outlined Greg:

“Interested people (usually solicited through presentations by me to a church, service club etc.) register to receive envelopes with a membership # on it. We ask the members to put $5/month in an envelope and deposit it into one of five boxes around town i.e. The Perc Coffee Shop, Tim Hortons–North end, Mary’s Coffee Shop, Campbell’s Office Supplies, and Studers Variety Store. Throughout the year a tally is kept for the total amount give per year and is reported directly to the Corner Cupboard who will issue a tax benefit receipt. Most people give an aggregate of $60/year. However some give much more and a few give what they can when they can.

To date the project has collected over $14,500. The average monthly contribution is about $735/month. Now the rent for the Corner Cupboard is about $900 a month so this project covers off about 85% of that expense without interfering with community members’ regular donation (either cash or food).

The idea came about by thinking how could a family sit down over one meal per month and frugally save $5/month. Things like skip dessert for a meal, have a meatless meal, take the coffee from certain days of the week or consider a smaller size of beverage and use the savings to attain the desired $5/month without feeling a thing. ” (Greg Currie =765-2207)

-

AYLMER – (Information contributed by Susan Morrell of APAC) – “The Aylmer Performing Arts Council presented Juno and Grammy award-winner Dan Hill on Saturday, December 11 to an appreciative crowd at the Old Town Hall theatre. Dan entertained the sold-out performance by playing guitar or keyboard, and singing new songs, as well as familiar hit songs from his early career. His career as a singer/songwriter began when he was a teenager, and continues to flourish. Recently, Dan published a book: I am my Father’s Son: a memoir of love and forgiveness, which details his father’s career and his own, and the relationship they shared. Dan read portions from his book in introducing the songs he performed for the audience. He also had his new CD: Intimate for sale, along with copies of the book, which he signed after the performance. A wonderful evening, with a very talented performer.”

“A READER WRITES:”

-

“Hats off to our town work crews for keeping the streets so clean after the snowfall last week. I visited London on Saturday, and was shocked to see the condition of the streets – especially the side streets. Having been born and raised in London, it never used to be this way. I suppose that’s because they have contracted out snow removal, you get what you pay for!” (Dave Dykeman)

-Council agreed to accept the tender of 2cg Consultants of London to help develop a Waste and Recycling plan for next year with the town’s Waste Management contract due to expire then – provincial funding will provide for 75% of the $7,740 consultant’s fee.

Norm didn’t know how he knew either of those facts. He said he was with Microsoft – and Norm could call a number to ‘verify’ this – and if Norm allowed him ‘access to his computer’ , he could correct the problem. “DID AYLMER SCHOOLS EVER CLOSE 3 DAYS?”

-

(’76 Storm -Centre St. looking south from Sydenham) (CLICK))

-

AYLMER – Educators contacted by TANews can’t remember Aylmer schools ever being closed 3 days in a row.

The ‘big snowstorm’ on February 2, 1977 occurred over the weekend so schools only closed on the Friday. And the major ice storm in March, 1976 paralyzed the town for only 2 days – Tuesday, the 2nd and Wednesday, the 3rd.

In that event, despite classes being cancelled,  EESS actually remained open for the community because of its independent generator – most of the town was without hydro and phone service.  Lorch Electronics drove around town and broadcast by its mobile loudspeakers that people could come to the school – with its cafeteria open and manned by volunteers -for warmth and soup and sandwiches. Local drivers even went around to pick people up. One man unfortunately suffered a heart attack while at the school and had to be quickly rushed to hospital.

There was widespread damage from the ice especially in rural areas. Upland’s Pheasantry, owned by Al Streib, had all its nine acres of pens flattened and 4000 of its 5000 bird stock fly away. Tobacco farmers lost plants when greenhouses collapsed and dairy farmers lost milk production when their coolers shut down.

“TOWN HALL TALK:”

-

-New Malahide Mayor Dave Mennill has circulated, on request,  his opening address from Council’s inaugural session last Thursday. Some highlights:

-”In the past two years, we spent a lot of money.  Now this council must find ways to pay the piper.. … The question is how do we keep up our level of services while at the same time, hold the line on taxes….We have to pass the message to those individuals from whom we purchase goods and services that increases are not acceptable.  We must tell the Ontario Government to stop passing down legislation no matter how justified it may be, without the funding to implement it…..I believe we can accomplish our goal by simple barnyard economics.”

-”Immediately, I am suggesting to council  that we freeze council wages for 2011 and 2012.  As soon as possible, I would like to review the compensation package for our staff.”

-”I am going to suggest to council that we tie the tax increase to the Consumer Price Index.”

-

-Mayor Mennill is also going to start Council meetings  at 7:30 instead of 8:00 pm and to accommodate staff and councillors vacation time Council  will meet once a month instead of twice in the summer.

-Elgin County officials reported today that Mennill was elected the new Elgin Warden Tuesday night – a one year term.

‘CHRIST-MUST’  LIST #2 – “Corn. Cupboard Use Up”

-

AYLMER – The demand on the Aylmer/East Elgin Corner Cupboard in November was actually up nearly 50% from two years ago at this time.

Statistics from the Corner Cupboard show that the dramatic increase in its use which began in the spring of 2009 has continued this year. In September two years ago the ACC had 113 families attend in September, 139 families in October and 140 families in November. Last fall the September demand had risen to 161 families, with 150 in October and 192 in November. And this fall, the numbers are still up – September and October totals are the same as last year and November jumped to 206.

(The ACC is open for donations on Tuesdays, 9-Noon and 3-5 pm; a major need currently is for canned fruits.)

-

-

“BIRTHDAY GIFT, BIRTHDAY SUIT = NO PARTY FOR POLICE”

-

AYLMER – For the second week in a row Police had to deal with a domestic assault situation where one of those involved was nude – and this time an officer was injured.

Around 3 am Sunday morning Aylmer Police, with Elgin OPP assistance, were called to a Water Street residence by a 51-year old Aylmer male who had been struck on the head by an object.  He  fled his apartment after his 41-year old female partner had hit him and then began throwing objects around the room. Apparently an argument ensued when the female felt her partner had not appreciated his birthday gift – a fishfinder. Upon arrival the Police were refused entry by the female who kept screaming and pounding on the door. Finally the female turned off the lights and came out – naked -  swinging her fists. She struck an officer in the mouth causing a minor laceration. She was pepper sprayed, given a robe and then taken to a cruiser. However she kept kicking and shouting obscenities on route to and inside the station where she was detained overnight. She was charged with assault, assault on a peace officer and mischief. The victim received 10 staples to close his wound.

“AYLMER COUNCIL ‘WEATHERS’ FIRST SESSION”

New Aylmer Mayor Jack Couckuyt takes the Oath of Office from Town Administrator Heather Adams at the first Council meeting last night. (CLICK)

-

AYLMER – A small crowd braved the elements and attended the inaugural – and short (a half-hour) – session of the new Aylmer Council last night. New  Mayor Jack Couckuyt said the weather was an omen and that this council was “coming in with a blast”.  A moment of silence was held due to yesterday being the anniversary date of the ‘Montreal Massacre’.  Legion Padre Michael Wellwood led a prayer for the new council.

“EESS REPORT” -(by Lindsay Pie/Nichole Loewen)

“Christmas is a busy time of year for everyone and East Elgin is no exception.  Things that have/ are going on at EESS are: a Challenge Day poem book, the semi Dance, tacky sweater day, toys for tots, turkey dinner, decorating doors, our annual Christmas assembly, and today our first snow day.  Two of the Grade 10 English classes are putting a Challenge Day poem book together about their experiences at Challenge Day.  The title, poems and artwork found in this book have all been made by these classes. Every year close to Christmas, EESS puts on a tacky sweater day where all the students and teachers are invited to wear their best tacky sweater for a whole day.  Whoever wants can be entered in a competition to see who in the school wore the tackiest sweater. Toys for Tots is put on by a club at East Elgin.  They collect toys for kids who won’t receive as much for Christmas this year.  Help support this and drop off toys at the school.  They must be brand new and unwrapped.  December 6 was the first official snow day for most schools!  Almost everyone (excluding parents) was excited about this.    What’s been anticipated for as long as anyone can remember finally happened! Semi formal! Semi formal is an extravagant dance where students dress up and have fun with friends. The dance was a good turnout with amazing decorations and music. Everyone had fun and made the night well worth it. This year East Elgin is having a door decorating contest. The teachers and students will be decorating their home room classroom door with anything they please for a chance to win! This is a wonderful way to get into the Christmas spirit. Also, happening again this year and for the last year at EESS is turkey dinner. Turkey dinner is where you pay $5 to get a big plate filled with turkey, mashed potatoes and any other Christmas food you can imagine.”
