“KEN WILLIAMSON BUILT AYLMER STRAND”

-

AYLMER – Ken Williamson, who died this week, not only began the former Aylmer Dairy in 1938 (on John St. North, later relocated to Talbot St. East – Goodwills) but in 1947 established the town’s last movie house, the Strand Theatre. Aylmer had the Capitol Theatre on the north side of Talbot St. east previously but it closed in 1947, being deemed too small for the times by its owners. Williamson and partner Robert McEwan then erected a larger building – the Strand – at the corner of Sydenham and John to keep motion pictures active in town.

” ‘LANTERNS’  ARE LOCAL GOSPEL GROUP”

- (This information is provided by Linda Wall) I am a member of the gospel band “The Lanterns”.  We have been together for about 7 yrs. and all are from the Aylmer area. There are 8 members. My husband Dave Wall (acoustic guitar/lead vocal/harmony), myself (harmony), my two sisters Justina Kornelsen (lead vocal), and Martha Bergen (bass guitar/harmony), and then there’s Ellie Friesen (harmony) and Anita Thiessen (lead vocal/acoustic guitar), who are sisters as well, and John Guenther (drums), and Ben Krahn (electric guitar). We are a very devoted bunch and get together every Monday for practice.

-
How did we come up with the name “The Lanterns”?  Well, we wanted something that would show we wanted to be a light. …God wants us to be a light. So I mentiond that a lantern has a light and so on. We started by having special numbers at churches and people seemed to really enjoy our music and strangers would come up to us and ask whether we had an album. We decided that we should try recording an album and see how it would go. We looked at who our fans were/are and who we wanted to minister to. And our majority of fans are low german speaking people. So we decided that we would record a german/low-german album titled “Disse Welt Es Nicht Mien Tus” (This World is not my Home) first and see how it would go. We were amazed at how well the album was selling. It is poorly recorded but God was really blessing us. We were singing in this area and the Leamington area to promote our new album. We sent cds to some Mennonite stores in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Texas, and Mexico.
-
Now people were asking for a second album and so we did an english one titled “Light of Love”. …also poorly recorded but better then the first one but still were very blessed with it too. We got an invitation from Mexico to come sing for our fans out there. After much planning and praying, the group decided to go do a tour in Northern Chihuahua, Mexico in August, 2007. What an adventure! We all got to go to where we  originated from.  We were there for two weeks. Once back  home , we continued singing and once more, people asked for another album.
We started our own recording studio right here in Aylmer in 2008. What a blessing. My husband Dave runs the system. We recorded our third album ourselves titled “Dankscheen Mami”, (Thankyou Mama), low-german, right out of our own studio.
-
In August of 2009 we were invited  to come to Alberta to sing. Again after planning and seeking God’s guidance, we set off to Alta. We were there for just over a week and were very blessed again.  After coming back from Alberta, we decided to take a couple of months off.  Well, a few months turned into a year but we are back at it again now.  Our first time was at the EMMC church at Summers Corners and we sang for the program called Celebrate Recovery. We are curently in the works of our fourth album. …we haven’t decided the title of it yet.”

“CHRIST- ‘MUST’ LIST #4 – DONATIONS”

-

AYLMER – Extra used skates? Minor Hockey doesn’t operated a skate exchange any longer and the Optimist Toy Drive isn’t a good fit for them. But the AMCS will take them. And much more.

The AMCS (Aylmer Mennonite Community Store) on Talbot St. east, operated by Mennonite Community Services,  is a busy spot in Aylmer for used clothing/articles. Linda Miller is the Manager – she provided this information:

“There are two part time assistant managers. We have between 80-100 volunteers depending on the season. We do get a lot of donations this time of year because of Christmas, people are cleaning out things. But I would think that yard sale season at the beginning of summer is busier, May to June.
Clothing is the biggest seller but it is almost even with our household items which makes up most of our other sales. Shoes and books are next after clothes and household items. The economy has affected the sales in the store. We have increased sales as the need increased. We have always had people who choose thrift even if they were able to buy full price but we have some that now need to shop thrift.

We do have items that we cannot sell and it is nice if the people dropping off donations ask us first and also bring it in and not leave it outside at night where other people steal it or it gets wrecked by the weather. We have a no televisions and computer screens policy and no encyclopedias. It is considerate if people ask us first. “

(The store’s holidays hours are: Christmas Eve closed at 12:30/ Dec. 25, 26, 27 closed/Dec. 28-31 open / Closed Dec. 31 at12:30. Open Jan. 4 for regular business.)

“AYLMER STORE OWNER JAILED FOR TAXES”

-

(Press Release from Province of Ontario) – On October 20, 2010, Morris Kikkert, of Aylmer, Ontario was convicted on eight charges under the Retail Sales Tax Act in the Ontario Court of Justice in St. Thomas. Kikkert, the sole proprietor for Tillsonburg Furniture and an officer and director of two numbered companies which operated as Aylmer Furniture and KK Auctions, was convicted of:

  • three charges of wilful evasion under the RSTA by failing to report and remit collected RST in the total amount of $144,809,
  • three charges of failure to collect RST in the total amount of $32,922, and
  • two charges of failing to keep records of all purchases and sales.

Kikkert was sentenced to 90 days in jail for the three convictions of wilful evasion, followed by 12 months’ probation, a term of which is to make payments toward fines outstanding from an earlier RST conviction. He received a suspended sentence for the remaining convictions.

The two corporations involved were also convicted of charges of wilful evasion, failure to collect RST and failure to keep records of all purchases and sales, and received suspended sentences for each charge.

“CHRISTMAS CARE BOXES GO OUT TODAY”

-

About 60 volunteers turned out to put Christmas Care boxes together at Immanuel Christian school this morning. (Photo by Don Durkee) (CLICK)

-

AYLMER – (Christmas Care boxes are being packed this morning for delivery after lunch – they expect the same number, about 350,  as last year. Information on the program, provided by Carolyn Buis Aylmer Christmas Care Co-ordinator, is reprinted from last year’s edition.)

“In 1990 we moved to Immanuel Christian School and packed 209 boxes. This year we packed 353 food hampers. They were packed in just under one hour.  The setting up of the assembly line of grocerries, bagging of the apples, oranges, cookies, sweet potatoes and packing of baby food takes all the prep time before. The arrival of the fresh produces, turkeys and hams and the donated goods that have been collected by schools, business and parades etc. all needs  to be co-ordinated to their designated spots.

We had approximately 75 volunteers ranging in age from 7 yrs to 80 years. The wrapping of the boxes occurs on the evening before we pack. It is very impressive in the morning to see the rows of wrapped boxes. The deliveries start as soon as the packing is completed. For Straffordville, Vienna and Port Burwell the boxes and the toys from the Optimists are picked up by members of the Lions Clubs and the Legion and then are distributed or picked up at the respective places. The length of time of delivery depends on the number of communty members who show to do this part of the project.

The basic grocery list varies little from year to year. Joanne Mantel and I order the groceries in early December.  We follow Canada’s Food Guide to provide and encourage balanced and healthy eating ie.  Cereal, butter, cheese, canned milk, canned fruit and veggies, fresh lettuce, carrots, apples, oranges, canned meat, fresh turkey or ham depending on family size. Special treats of a package of cookies, candies and hot chocolate, jello and dessert topping are added.

The donated/collected goods are added to the boxes also. These will vary in quantity and variety from year to year, but usually consist of  dry and canned pasta and sauces (lots of kraft dinner and mr. noodle), dry and canned soups, tuna, canned fruit and veggies and stove top stuffing and cranberry sauces etc.

John and Joanne Mantel have been with this project from its beginning approximately 40 years ago. My husband Ron and I have been with this project approx. 25 years. We have many individuals and families who return each year to lend a helping hand. That is very likely why everything moves so smoothly and quickly.  We stand amazed every year at the number of volunteers.”
