“MALAHIDE SUMMER ROAD WORK”
(Information provided by Rob Johnson, Malahide Director of Physical Services)
“There will be several short (less that 24 hr) road closures throughout the construction season as we keep up with regular maintenance activities on various roads. Subject to weather and construction delays, we are hoping Vienna Line is opened back up to traffic by mid September. We are finding this year that motorists are ignoring the road closed signs. Our operators are using large equipment under the assumption that no traffic is on the road. When operating large equipment, it can be very difficult to see vehicles. If you could also mention to your readers that: besides being very dangerous for both construction workers and motorists, it is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act to travel on a closed road. We have asked the police to monitor Vienna for violators. ”

“HILLS PHARMACY AIDS DIABETES PROGRAM”
(Media Release from Canadian Diabetes Association’s Community Pharmacy Outreach Program)
(Aylmer) – People living with diabetes in the Aylmer area will continue to have another resource to access relevant and timely information to help them better manage their diabetes. The Canadian Diabetes Association is pleased that Hills Pharmacy is continuing to be a member of the Community Pharmacy Outreach Program with hundreds of other pharmacies across Canada that offer additional assistance for those living with diabetes. “For many people, a neighbourhood pharmacist is one of the most trusted sources for healthcare advice,” said Cindy Silva, Public Programs and Services Coordinator, department, Canadian Diabetes Association. “People living in Aylmer can continue to count on the knowledgeable and committed employees of Hills Pharmacy to answer their questions, provide valuable support and offer the latest information from our Association. Pharmacies that join the program have well-informed and committed staff to assist with insulin meter training, advice and one-on-one consultations. Pharmacies also provide the latest in Canadian Diabetes Association literature and resources including information on upcoming public education events in the area.”
“Our partnership with the Canadian Diabetes Association is part of our continued commitment to our community. We are dedicated to serving our customers to ensure they have the information they need to make informed decisions about their health,” said John Bajc at Hills Pharmacy. “We are pleased that we can now offer those customers with diabetes added assistance, whether it concerns medications and supplies, or questions about monitors, strips, lancets and insulin.”

“UPDATE: ‘HELPING PAWS RESCUE’“
(AYLMER) – (Money raised at Elgin Feeds Pet Show Saturday went to ‘Helping Paws Rescue’. Info on that group is provided by Teresa Pressey) “I am part of Helping Paws Rescue along with my mom, Helen McCreadie. We started our rescue in the fall of 2006. We rescue dogs from local pounds, mainly Bayham pound but we work closely with Malahide and local rescues to help dogs in need. We have also rescued dogs from high kill shelters in Ohio when we have room. We have a few foster homes that help out when they can. To date we have rescued over 200 dogs that would have been otherwise euthanized.
The dogs are completely vetted before they are adopted out, including spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm meds, UTD vaccines and deworming as well as a complete vet check. We have had special cases where we have treated a few for heartworm and we have had to amputate a dog’s leg that was left untreated and badly injured. They are all in great homes now and living the spoiled life. We charge an adoption fee to help cover vet costs but we rely on fundraisers to cover the remainder of our costs to run the rescue. We do our best to help as many less fortunate dogs as we can. You can visit our website here: http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/ON260.html We are always in need of donations of dog food, blankets, towels and accessories. Also we are always looking for foster homes. It’s a good feeling to nurse the dogs back to health and see them go to loving, responsible homes. ”

“A READER WRITES:“
“I would also like to see a survey done on this site to see just how many people would like to see EastLink have some competition such as Rogers and Bell in this area. It isn’t fair to us that EastLink has a monopoly here when in most other areas people have a choice of at least two service providers such as Bell or Rogers. As for billing a month in advance, Bell does this as well, and unfortunately there isn’t a lot we can do about it. But we can demand a choice in service providers. If everyone would write to the CRTC – Canadian Radio-Television Commission and express your concerns as well as contact Bell and Rogers and invite them into our service area, perhaps we can make a difference. We can stand together and change this if everyone puts a little time and effort into it. EastLink needs to step up their Customer Service however, waiting on the phone to speak with a Customer Service representative for hours on end and then be told “It is what it is” is not acceptable. Also, in the letter sent out addressing cable boxes, they weren’t entirely truthful. Not all cable boxes are free of charge. If you have an HDTV you need a cable box for, you will be charged either $10.00 or $15.00/month depending if you want a DVR box or not. I have checked a close family member’s Bell phone bill as well to compare prices, and Bell definitely has better rates for home phone services. If you have a Bell bundle you get a home phone line with two calling features such as call display or visual call waiting for $29.95/month as opposed to Eastlink’s $30.75/month for basic phone line plus $13.00/month for Visual call waiting and another $8.00/month for call display. I would be interested in knowing if anyone else has found their internet connection slower in the recent month or so, I know I sure have and when I talked to Eastlink about that, the issue was completely ignored.” (Jeannette Brubacher)

Drowning of spots in some fields as well is becoming apparent. Also some wind damage in some fields. Hopefully we can get an expanded period of sunshine to dry things out.”

“CIB JUDGES VISIT OVER”
(Summary provided by Judi Wright, CIB Co-Organizer)
AYLMER – Judge Arlene Janzen is from White City, Sask. She had driven through town once while visiting relatives. Katy Moss Warren, from Orlando,FL, was a first-timer to this area.
They were both aware of the Amish, but have never visited Amish Country. They were intrigued with Mr. David Luthy, who entertained them for a little over an hour on Wednesday. They were genuinely interested in all aspects of Aylmer, and those who call it home. Their comments were astute and reflected the respect they have for the town and the people. I cannot comment on suggestions they left with us because they must be shared with the committee and town, first. They expressed appreciation for the opportunities we offer youth to develop interest and knowledge in their environment, they were keenly interested in our lagoon system and the quality of the water we put back into the watershed, and they were very interested in our energy conservation measures, recycling and reclaimation initiatives. Rotary Park and the Audubon Sanctuary Certification, as well as the naturalization of all parks, were noted as areas we must be proud of. There were many other positive comments reflecting the genuine concern Aylmerites have for each other and their environs. The BBQ honouring the supporters of CiB, The People Who Make a Difference Award recipients and our seniors of the year, was a highlight for them.
They were the most out-going, fun-filled, genuine judges we have had. All judges have been knowledgable, but these two embraced the community from the moment they arrived. We will know the results of the judging October 29-30. They will be announced at the National Parks Symposium in Halifax, N.S.”

I tried to call back again today and got an automated – “all circuits are busy”. What recourse do the Aylmer and Area people have at this over-billing and advance billing that East Link is charging? It is time to allow other providers into our area. This monopoly MUST stop.” (Tracey Tiersma)

“A READER WRITES:”
“WOW!!..Just received my phone bill. As expected i am charged double. I also noticed in the box stating * previous balance* it is more than what my last months bill actually was. I got out my phone bill from June and read what i owed, checked to see what i had paid and it works out by my calculation. Not sure where Eastlink got their figures from. There are people on budgets, welfare, single mothers and fixed incomes. Those of us who were unfortunate and lost their job to this wonderful economy, now Eastlink expects us to pay for what? Their trucks being repainted to now advertise Eastlink? The commercials i see on tv? To me this was bad timing on Eastlinks part. I refuse to pay this amount and i WILL go elsewhere to get the same services. Get rid of house phone, just use my cell, get rid of cable, use satellite, get rid of internet, go wireless. I hope others agree with me at how outrageous this is and voice their opinions as well.” (Kelly Rapelje)

“A READER WRITES”:
“This is in response to the approval of the dog park here in town. Great-we have a dog that would love that! We also have 2 children under the age of 12. I am hoping that is just a typing error because taking the time to use the dog park would surely be a family affair for most families. I am afraid it would not get used enough if children under 12 were banned. If there is a safety issue at hand-I am guessing dogs that behave badly should not be allowed to use the dog park and hopefully responsible owners would recognize this.” (Becky Matthews)
“A READER WRITES”:
“I am a big fan of a dog park in Aylmer. However I do have some concerns with the stipulations of no childen under 12. I understand that this is a park for dogs and not children but it is difficult as a single mother to take my dog to the park when my son is not allowed in the park. I would like to see a revision to the rule as follows: No children under 12 unless supervised by an adult and no strollers.” (Jennifer Lammers)

“COUNCIL APPROVES ‘AYLMER DOG PARK’“
(AYLMER) Council Monday also gave support to an ‘Aylmer Dog Park’ after hearing a report from co-organizer John Forsdike. The Park will be located at the west end of the Fairgrounds, mainly due to available fencing and parking and approval from the FairBoard. The Park should be open later in August (it will close during next year’s Fair). The cost, estimated at $1500 – mostly for completion of fencing - will come through fundraising. The organizers canvassed neighbours for input as well. The Park will be open from 7 am to Sunset and will include such guidelines as: No children under 12 or puppies under 6 months allowed, no food or toys, and maximum 3 dogs per user. Also, no smoking (dogs included presumably!).

“BELMONT GIRL IN PEPSI COMMUNITY CONTEST”
(Information submitted by George Cleminshaw of Pt. Bruce, grandfather of Susanna) “The Pepsi Refresh Challenge is looking for individuals, businesses, non-profit organizations with ideas that will have a positive impact on communities. Details at “http://www.refresheverything.ca/how-it-works” . The PANTS Project: Last year Susanna Taylor of Belmont and two friends travelled across Canada, interviewing people who are creating positive change in their community. They met tons of people, and learned one heck of a lot. And they filmed it all! With their film nearly done, they want to share what they learned with youth across Canada in order to inspire change. Their plan is to distribute their CDs, free of charge, to individuals and community groups across our great country. In order to do this they need financial assistance. You can help by going to the “Pepsi Refresh Project Page” at http://www.refresheverything.ca/pantsproject, and placing your vote. Remember “vote and vote often” – you can vote every day. About Susanna: Susanna Taylor lives on a farm near Belmont. She is a graduate of Parkside Collegiate and a recent graduate of McMaster University. ”
