“CLUB 7 MAKES APPEAL TO MALAHIDE”

-

Keith Hunt, StPauls United Church Club 7 Leader, sent a letter to Malahide Council Thursday asking for permission to establish drop boxes throughout the township in order to increase the group’s paper collection program. Council referred the matter to staff for further consideration. Here is a partial text:

“Many residents of Malahide Township bring their papers into Aylmer to support our recycling program. We would like to establish drop boxes throughout the Township for residence to leave their papers. We would pick up the papers every week and maintain the boxes. We would suggest each fire hall as a possible location for these drop boxes. If the recycled paper was diverted from the blue box program there would be a significant savings to the Municipality. The money we raise goes back to the community and worthy charities. The young men of this club gain valuable experience in community involvement.”

“GETTING HIS  BEAR-INGS  IN NEW AYLMER HABITAT!”

(This ‘Bear’ was set up in the lot south of the library on Thursday. Photo supplied by Don Durkee. Info provided by Thom Polland, Aylmer Parks Director)

-
“In the summer of 2009, the town put the green wire animations in Kinsmen Park, which was very well received from the public.  Due to the
location, the animations were subjected to severe and repeated vandalism, which resulted in them having to be removed.  The bear was part of that original purchase in 2009.   It is made from a wire frame and stuffed with moss – the idea is to use plant material that would for example
resemble fur, and yes, the bear is sturdy.”

AUTHOR KELLEY ARMSTRONG OF AYLMER HAS RELEASED ‘WEREWOLVES’ AGAIN’ “

(Author of numerous ‘supernatural’ books, Kelley Armstrong, of Aylmer,  just released another in the past week – ‘Tales of the Otherworld’. A recent story in the ‘Globe and Mail’ noted that last year’s novel ‘The Awakening’ debuted at Number #1 on the New York times booklist. She features werewolves in many of her accounts – “I love werewolves,” she says. “They are my favourite supernatural type.”. She provided this information for TheAylmerNews on her writing.)

1-(From the Globe and Mail interview)

“Armstrong’s werewolves are more like real animals: cunning, intelligent and under control. She makes clear that in her fictional world, becoming a wolf “doesn’t mean you go around slaughtering people at midnight, because animals do not generally do that. But it does mean you would have no problem killing someone for survival or territory or anything like that, because that is how an animal thinks.”

-

2-How long have you been in Aylmer and why choose it?

-”I live outside Aylmer.  We moved here twelve years ago.  My husband and I grew up in London, and our families are still there, so while we wanted to get out of the city, we also wanted to stay within an easy drive.”

-

3–Are your books available locally; what age range do you think is your greatest readership”

-”I believe the Aylmer library has them.  Otherwise, they’re available at Rose Cottage books in Tillsonburg, and any of the Chapters/Coles chain stores in Canada.  My readership varies.  For my teen books, it’s predominantly, well, teen.  For the others, it ranges from mid-teens up, though the majority of readers would be 20-50.”

-

4-Where will you have your first booksigning of the April 13th release of Tales Of The Underworld?

-”I don’t actually have any for Tales.  It’s an anthology, so it’s overshadowed by my third YA novel, which came out April 6.  My only official Canadian signing is in London (April 16) because I’m doing a US tour for this one instead.”

-

5-Do you use any local ideas/settings in your books?

-”I don’t.  Sorry!  Writers fall into two groups–those who use local settings and those who separate work and home by not using them.  I’m one of the latter.  The closest setting I do is Toronto, and even that’s only featured in a few of my novels.”
-
6- “With your family, what is the your best location and time for writing?
-”Having a family means I don’t get the luxury of choosing when or where I’ll write!  I usually do it when the kids are at school and my husband is at work, but that doesn’t always cover it.  I’ve learned to be able to shut everything out and write whenever I can.”

Studers Dairy, John St. South, will relocate to London this summer

“MORE ON STUDERS’  RELOCATION THIS SUMMER FROM AYLMER”

(Info provided by Tony Studer)

“The present warehouse is just east of Memorial Parkway on Catherine St., Dorchester.  We hope to combine both businesses into one modern centralized building in Trafalgar Industrial Park at the corner of Sovereign and Swiftsure Court. We plan to sell dairy, ice cream and ice products in London and in all surrounding communities from that location.  We hope to double our business by having a more modern facility. This will allow us to produce more ice, and have room to inventory more products more efficiently while being centralized to a larger and steadily growing population.

Roughly 45 years ago my father  purchased the business from Glovers Dairy. We just produced milk back then. When I took over we stopped producing milk and started ice production along with milk and ice cream distribution. The new plaza (in Aylmer) came about 22 years ago. We upgraded ice production about 10 years ago and opened the  London Quality building  about 7 years ago with son Mark helping to run it. Son Mike is working in Aylmer in the ice and ice cream business and oversees our investments in Studer holdings. My wife Shiela oversees our offices. As you can see we need an updated facility in one location.”

“AYLMERITE DESIGNS WEB DIRECTORY  FOR AYLMER BUSINESSES”
(Info contributed by Bob Mutch of Aylmer)
-
“I moved to Aylmer 7 years ago from Chilliwack BC.  My background is IT.  I ran a IT consulting business. I have listed 105 Aylmer web sites on this page and am giving them a link from AylmerOnline.Com , SEOCompany.ca, and MoreChristLike.Com. ( http://www.aylmeronline.com, http://www.seocompany.ca/no-spam-in-aylmer-ontario., and html  http://morechristlike.com/aylmer-ontario/ I also own 10 directories which I am considering giving them links on and I will also submit them to the Aylmer DMOZ category. Many if not half the links in the DMOZ Regional Aylmer cat have been subbed by me. The idea is to get all these sites pushed up in the SERPs for “Aylmer Ontario” and this will enable people to find local business websites in Aylmer by searching Aylmer Ontario.  I just pay for it myself. It’s unique because it’s all on one page. I am considering offering free websites to all businesses in Aylmer. They would have a content management system so the people could add and edit pages and content. Hosting would be free and the site designs would be free.”

“ELGIN OPP SEATBELT CAMPAIGN” (Submitted)

“The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be increasing enforcement throughout the province to ensure that motorists everywhere do their part in saving lives by buckling up. The increased enforcement is part of the Spring Seatbelt Campaign which is a partnership between the OPP, Ontario Ministry of Transportation and other road safety partners. The campaign runs from April 14 to 24, 2010.

In OPP jurisdictions this year (2010), eleven people have lost their lives as a result of not wearing their restraints at the time of the crash and many more were seriously injured. In 2009, a total of 310 people died in motor vehicle collisions on highways patrolled by the OPP and in 68 of those deaths (26 percent) seatbelt non-compliance was a factor.

Elgin OPP members will be focusing their efforts on child restraints during the campaign to raise awareness and protect children. A properly used child booster seat reduces a child’s risk of injury in a crash by as much as 75 percent, yet OPP officers find many child car seats are incorrectly used or incorrectly installed.”

‘THE SATURDAY C(S)EREAL” =     “INTERVIEW = John Wilson”

John Wilson beside some of the games he has carved from wood.

(John Wilson of Dufferin St., Aylmer, has lived his whole life in town. His father John L. Wilson founded the Aylmer Steam Laundry, in the building just north of the library.)

1.EARLY LIFE -  He was born in 1925 – his parents John and Eva (Peckham) lived on Queen St. North.  In 1906 his father and grandmother started a laundry uptown on Talbot St. west.  They bought out another new laundry business which was called Aylmer Steam Laundry a few years later and moved both operations into a new building just around the corner on John St. South in 1921. He remembers as a boy playing in the old ‘haunted and abandoned’ Aylmer Pump and Scale Factory across the street from his home behind the present United Church.  He recalls the  older grades having to attend classes in the Hat Factory on Myrtle St. as the new High School was being built in 1938 – and then has recollection of bricks falling off the classroom walls as the contractors were later sued by the school board for poor workmanship.  Boys who snuck down in the basement of the school to smoke were usually caught. He worked at the Steam Laundry during  his high school summers. He was a member of the Aylmer Boys Band, practicing in a Bandhouse on the site of the present Bandshell.

2.LATER LIFE: He went to work for the Laundry after High School where his two older brothers and sister also worked but he didn’t like it so moved on to other jobs. He worked several years at White Electric, then Robertons Furnishings uptown servicing appliances, then Robinson Hardware and then McClays Jewellers. He married Phyllis Thomson of Toronto; they met while she was a new teacher at the Aylmer High School.  They built the house he still lives in fifty years ago. He also was a Scoutmaster in town for 33 years. Another more recent hobby was his purchase of a 1930 Ford Model A Coupe which he still drives and shows regularly . He has already had a run down to Port Bruce this spring.

3.MEMORIES OF AYLMER:  He remembers the Brown House Fire of 1934 as his older siblings hauled him out of bed at 4 am to view the fatal blaze. He watched from his house as smoke poured out of the Capital theatre uptown when it burnt.  He visited the Aylmer Train station often as the Aylmer Steam Laundry shipped/received their goods by train before truck freighting became affordable. The Steam Laundry was sold to Ray Shepherd and Bob McEown of Aylmer in 1946 and they renamed it Aylmer Cleaners and relocated  it uptown to the north side of Talbot St. west.

“AYLMER CHERRY ST. GROUP STILL BLOSSOMING 40 YEARS LATER!”

(‘Cherry Street’, a non-profit housing organization in Aylmer, applied to Aylmer Council recently for a zoning change to allow the demolition of a house at the corner of Caverly Rd/South St.  in order to put up a semi-detached duplex. Council will hold a hearing on the issue on April 19.  Treasurer Paul Baldwin provided this information on ‘Cherry Street’)

“The organization grew out of the Aylmer Welfare Council thatwas formed in the late 1960s ,first to address the needs of transient workers who came to Aylmer to work in tobacco but had nowhere to live until farmers took them into their bunkhouses at the start of harvest.  The workers  hung out in Aylmer and were without much money/meals/shelter.  Rev. Ron Matthewman and Father White, Gene Dopp, Blair Barons, et.al. reacted with a large tent at the Fairgrounds.  This initiative led to an attempt to address these  needs, first to the collection and distribution of goods needed – fridges, stoves, etc. and then to providing housing. So a formal organization was chartered in 1972 and a 100% CMHC mortgage was arranged to buy the Cherry Street Duplex at now at 25/27 Parkview.  Gene Dopp, John Frisch, Harry Barnsley, Erla and Joe Carroll and Don McKinnon were on that Board and since that time Cherry Street has acquired additional properties and now have 15 houses and 17 affordable homes. (The ‘label’ derived from the previous name of Parkview, (Cherry St.) so the group kept the name and the street changed.)

Don and Marilyn McKinnon were the managers until recently, although not the only managers. As mentioned, we now have 15 properties, all occupied with the exception of 2 now being renovated.  Persons needing affordable housing may apply through Abe Harms at the AMC office.  Abe is the President of the Board and with an office acts as the centre for applications. The Board has been for many years a 5 member Board with Don McKinnon, Marilyn McKinnon, Don Prendergast, Charlie Jackson, and Don and Marilyn’s daughter Maryanne Kirby.  Don, Marilyn, and Maryanne retired a year and a half ago and  Charlie’s recently died. The new Board is Abe Harms, President, Don Prendergast, Secretary, Paul Baldwin, Treasurer,  and Frank Martens.  I have been managing the properties although with recent extensive renovations at 25/27, I have taken on supervision of that job and Frank is now managing the tenants and properties.

The renovation of 25/27 is the current focus.  Meanwhile, we are applying for rezoning at 197 South St. W with the hope of building a duplex on that site.  The rents/costs – mortgage, taxes, insurance, maintenance – on a single residential make them prohibitive and in the long run maintenance suffers. So we are looking to tear down the house at 197 and replace it with a duplex, one unit facing South, the other facing Caverly.  That duplex will be built with the required “building envelope” eliminating the sight/site hazard now posed by the present house. There is a need, here and in Elgin generally.  St. Thomas and Aylmer are the centres of demand as they provide services to tenants who at most would only have one car.  With these initiatives, we are looking to provide three bedrooms to house young/small families.”

CROPPING AND SCRAPPING AT EMMC CHURCH SATURDAY”

(Info provided by Krista Taylor Rempel)

“On Saturday, April 10th, the Aylmer EMMC Church at Summers Corners will be the spot to be if you’re into cropping and scrapping. In conjunction with National Scrapbook Day, a fundraiser “Crop for Carol” is being held at the AEMMC Church.  Carol (Rempel) Hiebert, an Aylmer native, is currently teaching English and music for the next ten months in Pailon, Bolivia.  Carol, her husband Kevin and children Juliana, Micah and Levi will be living among the members of the Mennonite community in which Carol is teaching.  Kevin, a contractor, will be assisting with building projects, teaching job skills to the men and men’s ministry. The idea for this fundraiser came from thinking of all the memories they will be making in Bolivia.  This is such an incredible life experience for Carol, Kevin and their children.  So I thought, we could maybe help them out a bit financially by working on preserving our own memories in a crop day in Carol’s honour. The event is $35 and runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  The fee includes space to work, a hot lunch, snacks, beverages, prizes, gifts and more.  Crops are a wonderful place for other scrapbook enthusiasts to meet new people and work on their projects.  And you never know what you’ll learn. All proceeds will be donated to assist with their mission through the EMMC office in Manitoba. To reserve space or more information, please contact Krista at 519-913-1583 or email krista@rempel.ca .”
